Utility Assistance for Low-Income Households

Select a County
This indicator shows the number of households who received assistance to pay their cooling or heating bills from the New Jersey Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Why is this important?

Having a stable place to live is a major determinant of health. In addition to the ability to pay rent/mortgage and food, the costs of utility bills can have a great impact on families' health. Utility bills for basic services such as water, heat, gas and electricity are among the least flexible expenses for most families. For low-income families, in particular, the costs of utility bills may prevent them from keeping these services or from having money for other necessities, including nutritious foods and medical care.
